Dementia Care System Review

The Dementia Care System Review is an examination of current approaches for dementia care in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, in order to identify needs and challenges, and provide recommendations for developing a system for integrated care of patients affected by dementia.

Between December 14th and December 20th 2014, Dr. Miia Kivipelto and Dr. Francesca Mangialasche from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, conducted interviews with UAE based healthcare professionals involved in dementia research or clinical practice, with view to identifying strengths, needs, and challenges in dementia care.

Following the research, a report containing a summary of the key findings, and recommendations for establishing a model of integrated multidisciplinary approach towards dementia care will be produced.

Interviews were conducted with representatives from the following hospitals, clinics, care centers, and health authorities:

  • Sheikh Khalifa Medical City
  • Al Rahba Hospital
  • Al Bateen Clinic (part of Ambulatory Health Services Company (AHS))
  • Al Mudeef Center
  • Tawam Hospital
  • Rashid Hospital (in Dubai for their Residency Programs)
  • Health Authority – Abu Dhabi

Interviews were conducted with the following patient and caregiver’s advocacy groups:

  • Alzheimer Disease International (based in Lebanon)
  • 4get-me-not (based in Dubai)
  • Silviahemmet (based in Sweden)
