Warehouse421: A New Creative Space

In November, the Foundation celebrated the opening of Warehouse421 – the city’s newest arts and cultural destination—with a diverse programme of exhibitions, workshops, musical performances and a creative market. From 19-21 November, 10,000 visitors from around the UAE and the region took part in the 3-day opening festivities.

Warehouse421 celebrates the art and culture sector within Abu Dhabi by supporting artists and making art accessible to the broader public. Located in the historic Mina Zayed district, a former industrial storage space now converted into a multipurpose venue was designed by Danish architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG).

The opening weekend featured a diverse programme of interactive workshops, developed and led by art and design professionals; the Creative Market, celebrated 22 regional and international designers of jewelry, crafts, accessories, and design pieces; three award-winning musical performances and a selection of food & beverage from innovative food trucks.

Visitors also experienced four curated exhibitions which explored the ideals of memory and transformation which are all ongoing until 2016:

  • Lest We Forget: Emirati Family Photographs 1950-1999 (on until 18 June)
  • Mina Zayed: Through The Lens of Jack Burlot (on until 19 March)
  • 1:100 The Warehouse Reimagined (on until 23 January)
  • Art: Process & Practice (on until 23 January)

Starting January 2016, Warehouse421 will present an annual programme of art, design and creativity through exhibitions, workshops, panel discussions, and screenings.
